Think ‘green’ with Kids for Earth

September 30, 2010

For the past decade, we have been bombarded with information and news regarding the deterioration of our planet and her assets. As adults we have the choice of taking a more eco-friendly path and as the issue becomes more urgent, we must now pass the knowledge on to our children. The most basic things like cutting down on the use of plastic bags, water and electricity can be drummed into children from an early age. But ultimately it’s up to us as parents to instil these values.

Earlier this year I was listening to the Business Radio Station, BFM 89.9, and heard a fascinating segment on a couple of siblings enthusiastically sharing their passion about saving the environment and becoming eco-friendly in daily life. Gabriel and Raphaelle Tseng are 14 and 11 respectively, and to say they are wise beyond their years is an understatement.

When adults talk about serious matters like pollution or the environment, the usual reaction is disdain and boredom. And that’s why having your peers talk and educate you about something as crucial as this is incredibly important. Kids for Earth was started in 2009 by Gabriel and Raphaelle to encourage kids to be aware of what is happening to the environment, and how it’s going to affect all of us in the long run.

The foundation of this project is their unique presentation, titled Billy the Plastic bag. This is presented at schools and is basically the story of the life cycle of a plastic bag from the moment it’s used to carry groceries, to its ultimate demise as the worst kind of pollution – killing marine animals, entering our food chain and never fully disintegrating – pretty depressing stuff.

To encourage kids to participate more, contests are held to see who can design the best reusable cotton bags, which can be ordered online and whose sales proceeds go to green charities; and to take the No Plastic Bag Pledge.

Have a look at this site and get involved with your kids. They encourage feedback and if your child’s school is interested in the presentation, contact them via their website or email gabrieltseng@kidsforearthasia.com.
